Welkom Saturday September 2005, Welkom, forecast indicated a brilliant day. 8.00 at Kroonstad the wind is strong, gusty, ... bummer looks like a blown out day. 9.30 , 70 km further on at Welkom, no wind. We start winching from 10.50 onwards in a light N wind. Not much of a thermal activity. 12.30 I launch, get some broken patchy, bubble lift, drift with it and after 8.5km land in some mining area. SMS'ed my coords to AAA, BBB,... , YYY and XXX. Then packed up and walked to the road that had the most traffic on it. When I got to that road, get a message that XXX has taken the Venture. And is driving on the wrong road to find me. And she forgot her cell phone. After a while I here a kid broken up on the radio ... "anyyybooody out there, can anyone heeeeaaare me .... " and " The car is stuck in the sand, XXX is gone to the farmhouse". Then YYY phones. XXX tried to put the Venture into 4x4 training and take it cross country. Through the sandy mealie fields to cut across to where I landed. She nearly made it. Got stuck 1.5km from where I SMS'ed my landing coords. Then opted to walk towards my landing position with the eMap. Leaving the kid with a radio behind in the car. Close to my landing position she came across some mining security staff who managed to contact YYY. YYY collects me, then we get XXX. But we can not see the Venture. We use the backtrack on the eMap. YYY has to activate the 4x4 mode. Driving through the sandy tracks we finally see it when we are 50m from it. Hidden in some ground depression. YYY pulls out some packaging string while I am rummaging through the Venture to find my tow rope. The string snaps when we try to pull out the Venture. Then I find my proper tow rope and we manage to tow the vehicle out of the sand.
